DELF A1 : What you should know?

At the A1 level, it is important to know the basic knowledge of the French language. You are expected to communicate in a simple, yet understandable way.

DELF A1: Grammar

While you are not required to dig deep into the grammar subjects, you should understand enough rules to read and write basic sentences.

  • Parts of speech (especially nouns, pronouns, verbs, and adjectives)
  • Essential verbs (être, avoir, aller, faire)
  • Conjugations of present tense

DELF A1: Reading

Most of the materials at the DELF A1 level focus on getting basic information from a short message, such as date, time, address, price, phone number, etc. Some of the formats are:

  • Invitation card
  • Schedule
  • Price table
  • Short classified ads

DELF A1: Listening

On the exam, you will listen to French at a natural speech. The content may be simple but they will not slow down for you. Ordinal numbers, times, dates, days, months, and years are among the most frequently items on the exam. You should train your ears for:

  • Liaison (nous avons = nous ZA-vons)
  • Numbers (21 = vingt-et-un, but 22 = vingt-deux, without et
  • Times (it’s 6 am. = il est six heures)

DELF A1: Speaking

At the minimum, you should be able to introduce yourself. You can earn extra points if you go off script or provide an impromptu response to an examiner. Strategy-wise, you can score substantial points on the self-introduction part if you prepare well on:

  • Name
  • Age (choose the correct auxiliary verb j’ai 25 ans, over je suis 25 ans)
  • Nationality
  • Occupation
  • Where you live
  • Your family
  • Your hobbies

DELF A1: Writing

There are 2 parts: filling out a form and writing a short message (40-50 words). For the short message, you are expected to write in the following formats:

  • Postcard
  • Invitation
  • Email
